Stuff to read if you're bored.

Who are you?

My name is Greg Cox, and I’m a lawyer based in Fort Worth. I’ve spent the better part of my career in and around Texas law and government. I got my start when I was an aimless college grad in Austin and a friend suggested I interview for an internship with some guy named Greg Abbott. I did just that, and a world was opened to me that I never knew existed. Since then, I’ve campaigned with Governors, litigated in both state and federal courts, shaped policy during legislative sessions, and even helped lead the state’s largest healthcare agency through the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you would have told me while I was slinging cars in downtown Austin that one day I’d have thousands of people reading my writings on law and policy, I would have laughed at you.

These days, I am focused on writing, speaking, and running my law firm where we guide clients through the maze of regulatory, administrative, and municipal laws. I enjoy speaking and writing frequently on the topics of Texas law and policy. I aim for entertaining, informative talks meant to give useful insight and analysis of the Texas political and legislative environment. If know a group that could use that, or if you just want to see if I really will talk to a brick wall about this stuff, email me at greg@gregcox.law.

Speaking of mazes, I have four incredible kids with my wonderful, beautiful wife, who has long encouraged me to start writing more, and for that I am very grateful.

What's this all about?

I aspire to be a source of incisive, fair-minded, and entertaining commentary about the full lifecycle of public policy. The lifecycle of public policy? Yes. What begins on a campaign trail goes through a legislative body and into the executive branch, and sometimes lands in a courtroom.

Given the importance of both law and politics in our massive state, I think it is more important than ever to have plenty of voices and sources offering insight and commentary into the increasingly fast-paced and insular world of political and legal developments.

As I analyze complex and controversial legal issues and delve deep into the latest trends and events in this world, I don’t pretend at all to be objective. Like everyone else, I have my bents and biases. For instance, I’m not much for Whataburger. Sorry. But I do strive to be fair-minded and will always make every effort to present the multiple sides to an argument or issue. I understand why people can love Whataburger. In fact, that’s my whole point here. To help add color commentary to some of the things that are presented as black—or orange—and white.

Lastly, humor is important to me. I like to goof off. I try to take the ideas seriously and myself not as much.

What can I expect from your writings?

Thoughtful, in-depth, witty analysis of the current issues, judicial rulings, legislation, and regulatory actions shaping Texas and beyond.

Occasional spotlights on influential figures in Texas law, politics, and government—judges, lawyers, and policymakers whose decisions and actions matter.

Attempts to make boring things great again, like municipal governance, energy and water policy, and administrative law—plus what they mean for the state and its citizens.

Detailed insights into the most significant legislative developments and regulatory shifts, explained in plain English. This is especially true when the Legislature is in session.

Stories that illuminate the past and place current issues in their historical context.

Like Texas itself, this project is always evolving. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you’d like to see. Drop me a line anytime.

Anything else I should know?

Would I be a very good lawyer if I didn’t have a few paragraphs of disclaimers and disclosures?

First, I have numerous relationships with people in and around Texas law and politics. I like to think the vast majority of these relationships are good. At least, I am not aware of any major enemies. But the point is, I’m not going to disclose every single relationship when it comes up. I would surely sound like an arrogant, insecure, name-dropping busybody. So I won’t attempt such disclosures. Instead, you should just understand at the outset that my writing might be affected by some of my personal relationships, in some way or another.

Second, I am a practicing attorney with paying clients. This means I ain't gonna say stuff that would be antithetical to their interests. Most of my legal work is unaffected by my writing. And most of my writing is not of the advocating type. So it's not a real issue. But I want to be clear that no one is paying me to write beyond my regular paying subscribers. And if some secret global cabal ever wanted me to write pieces meant to sway their positions, I would probably tell you. Unless it was enough money to justify the ethics fines. (This is a joke. Don't break laws.)

Here's my own personal disclosure rule: if I ever mention an organization that has paid me for a speaking engagement in the past 12 months, I’ll disclose it—unless it’s a minor, passing reference or they’re just a regular paying subscriber. I believe in keeping things transparent without making it tedious. In other words, I'll do my best to keep things on the real, and you do yours not to be blindly influenced by my writing.

How can I contact you?

You may email me at greg@gregcox.law.

I love and appreciate getting feedback. It's why I write.

I do my best to respond in a timely manner. If you don’t hear back within a few days (and you’re not a crazy person I'm ignoring), please feel free to send it again.

I mean this is the most genuine, non-cliche way possible: hearing from people that read what I write is the fuel for this whole thing. I appreciate even the smallest of notes.

And even if I never hear from you, I appreciate you reading more than anything. It is truly the coolest thing in the world that you’d spend some of your 24 hours thinking about what I wrote down.

Thank you.

- Greg Cox
